Evironmental control and pig welfare 

The emphasis is increasingly on the control of animals’ surroundings, in other words understanding the “environment”and, if necessary, changing it to make it more “comfortable”. When we depart from the optimum conditions, the environment rapidly becomes a “stress factor”. The pig responds negatively in the short term with physiological, behavioral and immunological changes that affect its performance (production, reproduction and health) in the medium to long term.

Identifying these comfort-related problems in an objective manner must be the first step towards solving them. For this, it is necessary to have access to some basic tools, an appropriate methodology and an analysis of the values relating to the environment, the animal and the facilities.

We must also ensure that the climate control system is working properly and enables the agreed objectives to be achieved in a way that is effective and efficient. The design of a complete review plan requires maintenance, adjustment, input of parameters and monitoring on a regular basis. From here, we must feed back into the system for continuous improvement.

The systematic audits and studies carried out on the farm have the purpose of delivering an objective, independent and competent opinion that can be used to identify simple and affordable solutions for the customer. A findings and recommendations report will supplement future monitoring.
